Boomer Balls for the tigers
After winning the zoo's quarterly enrichment competition the cat keeper Alan Carter chose to spend the prize money on buying Boomer Balls for the animals on his section. The cat section includes Tigers, Black Leopards and Lynx as well as a number of smaller cats.
They were an instant hit with the Tigers who spent most of the morning bashing them around. Alan Carters comments:
" It was great to watch them have so much fun, it is a simple form of enrichment but effective!"
Meerkats Named!
Our two latest additions to the Meerkat mob were born on 4th May 2010. The two cheeky youngsters can be seen in Meerkat Manor digging and foraging with the rest of the group.
Baby marmosets born at Drayton Manor Zoo
Drayton Manor Zoo is inviting visitors to meet its newest arrivals this half-term (Saturday 13th – Sunday 21st February), a pair of baby marmoset monkeys.
The two common marmosets, named Dairy and Milk, were born overnight on the 18th November 2009, to proud parents, Natalie and Barry, who have been happily raising their twins with the support of their adolescent children, Haagen and Dazs.
This is not uncommon in marmosets, who traditionally live in small family groups in the wild. Originating from north east Brazil, common marmosets live in trees and are excellent jumpers.
Zoo manager, Joyce Roberts, comments: “Although still very young, Dairy and Milk are extremely adventurous, and are into absolutely everything, they love to climb. It’s wonderful to be able to see the whole family interacting and taking care of one another.”
