Endemic to a small region of southwestern Madagascar.

They will consume a variety of insects such as ants and termites. This diet allows them to obtain toxic alkaloids, which they use as a defense.

Eggs are usually laid on the ground, and the tadpoles, along with newly metamorphosed individuals develop within temporary pools created within rocky areas near canyons.

Blue-legged mantella
A colourful and beautiful species of frog that is endemic to Madagascar. A diurnal and quite active frog preferring open sunny areas with streams and temporary pools. Their striking colouration is a form of aposematism, meaning it acts as warning to predators to signal they are toxic if eaten. Their toxicity is reduced dramatically within a captive environment due to their diet.
Did you know?
Their main threat is habitat loss due to fires and grazing. However, in some localised regions they are threatened by sapphire miners.
