Regal Horned Lizard

Dipsosaurus dorsalis

Did you know?

When these lizards are threatened, they will play dead to avoid being eaten. If that doesn’t work, they can squirt blood from their eyes as a defence, which can reach up to 1.2 metres!

Home: North-western Mexico, extending into south-western United States.

Diet: In the wild, they mostly eat harvester ants, and can eat 2500 ants in one meal. In captivity, they eat a variety of insects.

Lifestyle: Found in hot dry habitats which includes rocky and gravelly shrublands. They hibernate late September through October, seeking burrows to avoid the cold temperatures.

Lifespan: 5-8 years.

Young: Mating begins late April and ends in July. Egg laying starts a few weeks later and approximately 10-30 eggs are laid inside a long tunnel made of sand or soil. The hatchlings receive no parental care and are independent of having to find and hunt their own food.

Conservation Status: Least Concern.
